Tech Talk: Is Iris Scanner a better security authentication?

Iris Scanner is considered to have its competitive advantage over Apple Face ID. These are:

  1. You only need the iris of your eyes to unlock your device instead of using your whole face.
  2. Everyone has its different patterns of iris, even twins cannot have the same one (Maity, 2017)
  3. You can either choose to scan both irises (dual iris scanning) or one iris (single iris scanning).

However, it does not mean that Iris Scanner is better and cannot be tricked by other hackers since there is nothing perfect in this world.

Security and Privacy have been a concern for all users which makes the company competing to produce safer and better authentication on devices. Many new authentications have been introduced including face id, pin, passcode, and more. Apple has introduced its new substitute authentication to secure its devices which is “Face ID” (Maity, 2017). Not long after that, Samsung has brought in new security authentication which is Iris Scanner. However, is the iris scanner a better authentication option to choose over Face ID?

Apple ID as first introduced on iphone 5S

This has raised controversy and debate in society. People have been arguing that iris scanner is a better option because it has a higher security level and no one can have the same iris’s pattern. It has been proved by an identical twin, Thomas and William, that they can unlock each other phone and it surprises them so much (Boyle, 2018). Not only that Face ID has been falsely proved by twin, it can also be hacked by another way in less than 120 seconds (Winder, 2019). Could this be the reason that people lose trust in Face ID and make Iris Recognition a stand out? Nevertheless, there is nothing perfect. Regardless of Iris recognition, it can still be hacked by creating artificial eyes using printer and contact lenses.

Iris Scanner as first introduced on Galaxy S8

The hacker state that the most expensive cost of hacking the iris scanner is to buy a Galaxy S8, not from the material being used (Hern, 2017). All you need are a high-resolution photo of the owner taken by a camera that could capture infrared light, a laser printer, and a contact lens. They also use Samsung laser printer to print the photo, which is like rubbing salt in the wound, in a specific. Later on, you need to place contact lens in order to fool the iris scanner with its curvature of the contact lens (Morris, 2017). Even though it has been proved by Samsung that it is hard to hack because you cannot really find the camera that could capture the infrared light, it has already been done. Therefore, be aware and cautious of anything that could happen to your data.

How Iris Scanner can be hacked?

Hence, none of the security authentications is 100% safe and guaranteed that your data will be secured. There are always flaws in each technology innovation. With this being said, it does not mean that you should leave your phone unsecured without using any of those security verification. You should at least secure your data by using some traditional methods including pin, or passcode that could be changed over time.
